Alienware’s new 32-inch 4K 240Hz OLED gaming monitor is made of pure want-

We knew it was coming, but it’s still exciting to see Alienware announce its new 32-inch 4K OLED gaming panel, the Alienware 32 AW3225QF. Alienware has also pulled the wraps off a new 27-inch 1440p OLED monitor running at fully 360Hz.

But first, that new 32-inch beauty. As with previous Alienware OLED gaming monitors, it uses Samsung’s QD-OLED panel technology. So, the main novelty here is pixel density. At 140DPI, this new panel is much more dense than any existing OLED gaming monitor, which all currently max out at around 110DPI for various 34-inch ultrawide and 27-inch 1440p models, including Alienware’s own panels like the Alienware 34 AW3423DWF.

Alienware says the new AW3225QF will hit 1,000 nits of HDR brightness, but it’s not clear how this new high density OLED panel…

Microsoft’s latest speech generator is so good it’s afraid to release it to the public

This thing we made is so brilliant, we can’t risk releasing it to the general public. So Microsoft basically says about it’s latest speech generator, VALL-E 2. So, does that reflect genuine concerns? Or is it a clever marketing ruse designed to get some viral traction and online chins wagging?

If it is all completely genuine, what does it say about Microsoft that it’s knowingly creating AI tools too dangerous to release? It’s a conundrum, to be sure.

Anyway, here are the basic facts of the situation. Microsoft says in a recent blog post (via Extremetech) that it’s latest neural codec language model for speech synthesis, known as VALL-E 2, achieves “human parity for the first time”.

More specifically, “VALL-E 2 can generate accurate, natural speech in the exact voice …

Dig VR announces collector’s edition with two real-life excavators and a trip to America that costs £499,985 more than the game by itself

The era of extravagant multi-hundred thousand dollar collector’s editions appears to have passed around a decade ago but one digging VR game has brought it back with a bang, or whatever noise excavators make.

Dig VR, as you might be able to imagine, is a VR game about digging. It releases November 14. Available as a preorder for £11 / $15, which goes up to £15 / $20 at launch, a new ludicrously over-the-top deluxe edition was just announced that can be all yours for a measly £500,000.

The main attraction here is two JCB 100c-2 excavators, each with unique wraps. One is a shiny yellow with Dig VR plastered on it, in lieu of the JCB logo, and another has Ashville Aggregates, an aggregate company on it. Delivery is not included in this price tag so you will …

After an epic 24-hour battle with Malenia and 1,700 deaths, Kai Cenat has finally beaten Elden Ring-

It took more than 165 hours of struggling and 1,700 brutal, sometimes funny, deaths, but Kai Cenat—one of the biggest streamers on Twitch—has finally beaten Elden Ring.

I became aware of Cenat’s Herculean effort last night, when a cryptic, single-line message appeared in my Twitter feed: “Kai Cenat has been fighting Malenia for 10 hours straight.”

What?

It was true. Not only that, he had been playing Elden Ring for nearly 130 hours by that point, and had died more than 1,400 times.

At one point during the epic battle, he thought he had her, only to find out that no, it wasn’t going to be quite that easy.

By the time he finally felled Elden Ring’s infamously difficult demigod, he was up to 148.5 hours and had died more than 200 times more. …

40K 4X Gladius – Relics of War is free to keep for a limited time-

The annual Warhammer Skulls event is always a fiesta of good news for Warhammer tragics, whether that’s announcements of whole new games like Mechanicus 2, expansions like Forges of Corruption for Boltgun, or additional details like the separate co-op campaign for Space Marine 2. But there’s usually a freebie to go along with it, and this year it’s Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War, which will be free to keep on Steam and Epic for the next week.

I wasn’t too hot on Gladius when it first launched in 2018, but the combat-focused Civ-like has seen a string of updates and expansions since then, and that’s done a lot for its scope and variety. These days it’s sitting on a respectable Mostly Positive user rating on Steam, and there’s DLC to let you play as factions like th…

Major browser providers scramble to patch an 18-year-old vulnerability affecting MacOS and Linux systems but Windows remains gloriously immune

We Windows users are sometimes the butt of the joke when it comes to cybersecurity issues. Or at least, we often used to be. Still, if I receive one more lecture on why Linux or Mac systems are more secure, I’ll at least have this article to point to. Not always, I shall say. Not always.

Oligo Security’s research team has discovered a “0.0.0.0 Day” vulnerability that affects Google Chrome/Chromium, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari browsers, enabling websites to communicate with software running on MacOS and Linux systems (via The Hacker News).

The vulnerability means public websites using .com domains are able to communicate with services running on the local network by using the IP address 0.0.0.0 instead of localhost/127.0.0.1.

The good news, i…

‘The baddest motherf—er in the room’ is, unexpectedly, the cozy building game Tiny Glade—which is already ruling Steam Next Fest with over 800,000 wishlists-

Steam Next Fest is almost upon us, and while there are typically going to be quite a few fantastic games that make an appearance, the cosy building game Tiny Glade is already leading the pack with over 800,000 wishlists on Steam, a fact that’s not gone unnoticed..

Ex-PC Gamer editor Tom Francis, the creator of Heat Signature, Gunpoint, and Tactical Breach Wizards took to Twitter to explain what it’s like for developers releasing games this Steam Next Fest. “Next Fest hasn’t started yet, but there’s a way to preview the rankings, and I love that the juggernaut game we’re all dwarfed by, the baddest motherfucker in the room, is Tiny Glade. A delightful toy where you just draw a lovely little castle and admire it. It looks great.”

We can’t see these rankings yet, bu…

Arrowhead CEO says Helldivers 2 balancing patches have ‘gone too far’ recently- ‘It feels like every time someone finds something fun, the fun is removed’-

I don’t envy the folks at Arrowhead charged with balancing Helldivers 2 guns fans have grown attached to. Arrowhead has rolled out a handful of sweeping balance patches in the game’s first few months, all of which I believe made the game better by both buffing guns with untapped potential and, less often, nerfing a weapon that’s dominant to the point of being boring.

But there’s an argument to be made that balancing shouldn’t be taken so seriously in a purely PvE shooter like Helldivers 2, and that it’s ok if one gun is dealing more damage than the rest. Replying to a player on Twitter who said recent patches have made the game “unplayable,” Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt conceded that he’s not satisfied with his studio’s current balancing approach.

“Hey, yeah I think we’ve g…

Baldur’s Gate 3’s spell tooltips have been lying to you for (potentially) months, though if you’ve been running off the % chance to hit, you’re just fine-

If there’s one thing Baldur’s Gate 3 players know, it’s that Sacred Flame, Shadowheart’s starting offensive cantrip, almost never actually lands. Players have been trying to figure out the arcane maths behind this most accursed of spells which, by all accounts, should probably hit some of the time—but it remains a mystery.

This morning, however, I stumbled upon a thread on the game’s subreddit that appears to have found the culprit, decrying Sacred Flame’s lack of accuracy as a mirage. The conclusions drawn don’t appear to be exactly right, but in investigating this myself, I’ve confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3’s spell tooltips are indeed bugged—and may have even been this way for months.

But first, if you’re unfamiliar with tabletop systems, you’…

26 years after Thief’s release, one of its programmers is streaming the game’s most ambitious mod-

After powering through Nightdive’s superb System Shock Remake, former Looking Glass developer Marc LeBlanc has returned to Twitch and YouTube to stream The Black Parade, a lauded mod that presents an interquel between the classic Looking Glass stealth games, Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age.

Thief modding is one of those little universes all its own, comparable to other retro treasure troves like the Doom and Quake scenes. Even still, the recent 10-level campaign The Black Parade is in a league of its own, boasting utterly huge levels, new voice acting and gadgets, as well as fresh systemic interactions like house servants who will clean up your sound-dampening moss arrow surfaces or relight torches you’ve extinguished. YouTube reviewer MandaloreGaming argues it …

GTA Online’s console-exclusive enhanced edition is finally coming to PC

After years of waiting, Rockstar says it’s finally going to bring the PC version of Grand Theft Auto Online to parity with the “enhanced” edition that’s been available for consoles for the past two years.

GTA Online came to Xbox Series X-S and PlayStation 5 in March 2022 with a variety of “technical and graphical improvements.” That version of the game has received several exclusive upgrades since, including ray tracing and the GTA+ subscription service, which offers players a range of monthly cash and content drops—all of it unavailable on PC. As we said last year, it felt like PC players were being left in the dust because… well, we were.

The first real sign that PC players might finally be brought up to speed came to light in September when Rocksta…

Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro gaming headset review

ViewCheck Amazon

Wired headsets can feel a little old-fashioned these days. After all, with so many great wireless headset options available, tying yourself to your machine with a cable seems like quite the restriction. Plus, it limits your options as to what role in your life it can provide—plenty of great wireless headsets support Bluetooth as well as RF 2.4 GHz connections, making them perfect for travel, whereas many modern phones don’t have 3.5 mm audio out ports anymore.

Still, when it comes to ultimate sound quality, many point to wired headsets as delivering the goods better than their wireless counterparts. That means any wired gaming headset is going to have one main purpose—delivering great audio while you’re sitting in front of your PC. And if you’re askin…

Our best wireless gaming headset is down to $139, which is a pittance to pay for a truly humongous 300-hour battery life

If there’s one thing that might hold you back from your next headset purchase being cable-free, then it’s likely to be the battery life. While a good wireless gaming headset unchains you from your desk, it does mean keeping an eye on the battery indicator and rummaging around for charging cables on occasion.

Well, rejoice, because our best wireless gaming headset has a truly monstrous 300-hour battery life, meaning those visits to the wall plug will be much less frequent. I’ve found the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless for $139 at Amazon, and at that price, it’s an even more obvious pick for cable-free gaming audio.

It’s not just that battery life worth shouting about, either. With a set of 50mm dynamic drivers, the Cloud Alpha Wireless offers a powerful, rich, and well-balance…

Baldur’s Gate 3 player finds an edge case the game doesn’t account for- Reverse-pickpocketing a dead wizard into the devil’s inventory like a Trojan nuke-

Baldur’s Gate 3 has choices—oodles of ’em. Choices that Larian’s accounted for, for the most part. In my recent playthrough, instead of taking a certain character to a certain body for a story quest, I picked up the corpse and dumped it back in camp like a cat bringing their owner a dead bird. The dialogue still worked (though I had to have them in my party) besides one or two out-of-context lines.

However, one player has found an edge-case scenario that the game doesn’t account for at all, and it’s honestly pretty reasonable when you break it down. Spoilers for Act 1 and Gale’s storyline to follow, as well as a minor Act 3 spoiler.

As outlined by ThePawn08 on the game’s subreddit, reverse-pickpock…

Dragon Age- The Veilguard’s story does get better, but its clunky script makes such a bad first impression—and those problems never quite go away

If you’ve been settling into the first few hours of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you might’ve responded in the same way I did—with a reflexive grimace every other line. Now that I’ve sunk close to 50 hours into the game, I’m here to tell you to keep going. The story does get better. Kinda.

I still think Dragon Age: The Veilguard misses the mark in a lot of ways, and the problems of its opening hours are still present in the rest of the game. But there are things to like here. Its characters sometimes have charming moments, it does have some interesting lore drops, and I have, at times, found myself genuinely endeared to its cast. I still think we’re leagues below Dragon Age: Origins in character writing (and still measurably lower on the ladder than Inquisition), but there a…

96 core AMD Threadripper Pro 7000-series chips reportedly ready for launch on October 19-

AMD’s Threadripper Pro 7000-series CPUs are launching very soon. While they might not seem all that relevant to gamers—at least the high core count options anyway—I am very much an advocate for proper high-end desktop (HEDT) platforms and would love to see consumer level Threadripper make a return.

According to Wccftech, AMD plans to unveil Threadripper Pro CPUs on October 19th. These chips will be based on the Zen 4 architecture led by the range-topping 7995WX with 96 cores and 192 threads. Add to that 384MB of L3 cache and you’re looking at an absolute monster of a chip. Of course such a chip isn’t particularly relevant for gamers when most game engines struggle to make use of today’s 16-core AMD CPUs.

Even the 64-core 7985WX and and 32-core 7975WX chips …

‘Big Wait’s dead’- Dwarf Fortress creators are going to stop disappearing for months to get updates done in a post-Kitfox world-

The arc of Dwarf Fortress is long, but it bends towards, well, not having arcs. In a chat with PC Gamer at GDC, Dwarf Fortress creators Tarn and Zach Adams spoke a little about their approach to the game’s meatiest patches in a post-premium edition world. Long story short? More bite-sized updates at a faster tempo. The Big Wait is dead.

Tarn said Dwarf Fortress’ model for updates at this point won’t be about “[running] off for 26 months, [seeing] what I can get done.” With new artists helping out for the game’s sound and audio and partners at Kitfox to help with marketing the game, Tarn’s going for something a bit “more orderly.”

After all, Tarn’s previous approach of absconding for months to work on major updates—usually called arcs, even after the game’s develo…
